Times are tough, so the idea of paying more than £4 for a meal deal with a sandwich will likely make you recoil.
So it might make you sweat to hear that there’s a cocktail bar charging more than £100 for a sandwich — and that price certainly doesn’t include a drink and a packet of salt and vinegar crisps.
Yes, a cocktail bar is charging a whopping £116 ($150) for a beef sandwich with cheese that many have likened to the Quarter Pounder burgers from Maccies.
Obviously, this isn’t just any old beef sandwich, it’s A5 Miyazaki wagyu, which is one of the world’s most expensive meats, costing as much as £780 for a tenderloin from some retailers.
For this sandwich, the beef is layered with aged white cheddar, minced onions, wasabi, and a Japanese barbecue sauce between slices of pillowy shokupan milk bread.
It’s then served inside a McDonald’s-inspired golden burger box, on an actual silver platter.
Known as the ‘Royale with Cheese’ this expensive item can be found on the menu at Sip & Guzzle in New York.
The dish was created by Mike Bagale, and for an additional £38 ($50) you can upgrade the sandwich and turn it into a ‘happy meal’ adding a black truffle cherry soda float, or white truffle milkshake. For another £38 you can have your sandwich topped with caviar.
Reactions to the sandwich have been mixed so far, with some going wild over it, claiming they ‘need it’ and that it ‘looks worth it’ and ‘incredible’.
But others are truly confused by the price tag, claiming it’s ‘insane’ and ‘absurd’ to pay that much money for any food, let alone a sandwich.
On X @theinfoministry commented: ‘No sandwich is worth $150. None.’ As @OH58DIP on TikTok joked: ‘Just a little bit more expensive than McDonald’s or Subway.’
Similarly @TomCaddy20 said: ‘Ok USA you need a Tesco and its meal deals.’
Meanwhile there were a number of people who couldn’t help but point out that a ‘Royale with cheese’ is the name of a burger at a number of fast food restaurants.
@return_to_sender0 wrote: ‘A Royale with cheese is a Big Mac.’ But @dizzified thought it was what they call a ‘Quarter Pounder with cheese’ in France, Belgium, and Croatia.
But Sip & Guzzle are well aware of the link between the sandwich and Maccies, and it’s intentional.
When promoting the new product, Mike shared a clip from Pulp Fiction on Instagram, showing Jules and Vince discussing the Quarter Pounder with Cheese and how it’s often called a Royale with cheese at McDonald’s in Paris.
Despite the reaction, several food bloggers seem to think the dish is worth the eye-watering price, as @chewyorkcity described it as the ‘star of the show’ during her review of Sip & Guzzle, while @kaitlyneats proclaimed it the ‘best steak sandwich’ she’s ever had.
The sandwich is the most expensive item on the bar’s menu, which also features a £77 ($100) ‘party dip’ dish made up of koji cool ranch, smoked golden osetra caviar and puffed chicken skin.
Meanwhile hot chilli chicken will set you back £21 ($28) and staff cut it up with scissors in front of you, something which has baffled a number of customers.
