Enchanted by all things history? Then this ‘magical’ uninhabited island – once famously visited by the Vikings – could be right up your street.
If the Big Smoke is getting overwhelming, or you simply want to incorporate a little bit of myth and legend into your daily existence, Fladda-Chuain (off the coast of Skye up in Scotland) is on the market for £190,000.
Yep, it’s a whole island. And it’s arguably not badly priced for the luxury.
To add a little bit of perspective: in May 2024, Gov UK data showed that the average cost of a London property was £532,000 – and up in Yorkshire and the Humber, it was £209,000.
So, at this point, why not go the whole hog and buy an island for markedly less than both these figures?
Fladda-Chuain (which translates to ‘Flat Island of the Ocean’) is the largest of the Fladda Island Chain, found just three miles northwest of the Trotternish peninsula on the Isle of Skye.
It’s also incredibly remote, at 100 miles from Inverness, the main city in the region.
With 69.99 acres of land, there’s no shortage of space – and it was once the subject of fascinating folklore, noted by legend as a sacred place where it’s eternally summer and the sun never sets.
In 1851, an 11th-century gold ring was discovered here, which remains on display at the National Museum of Scotland to this day.
And if you’re interested in learning more about the local history, ancient shipwrecks can be explored nearby, and it’s also an ideal spot for sailing, scuba diving and fishing.
At present, Fladda-Chuain, which is being sold by Goldcrest Land & Forestry Group, doesn’t have any human residents. However, it is populated by its very own colony of seals and dolphins, as well as porpoises, whales and basking sharks.
As anticipated, the views from the island don’t disappoint, either, with the dramatic landscapes of the mountainous Skye, northern Scotland and the Outer Hebrides all visible in the distance. How’s that for a morning view, hey?
There are small valleys, peaks and cliffs across the island too, and the highest point is 29 metres above sea level.
Interested? With permission, you might be able to build a small cabin on the island – and live out your cottagecore dreams.
And when it comes to transport, you’d be able to access the island using either your own vessel or, for a bougier option, hire a private boat to transport yourself to and from your new territory.
