A man has not had to pay a penny in rent, thanks to his savvy new lifestyle.
Amid the cost of living crisis, it’s safe to say we’ve all thought about how we can cut back on various expenses.
And it’s not just us – Maciej Bober, 41, quit his job and has been living in his car full-time for the past year. Moving into his Fiat 500, Mr Bober parks up on side roads and car parks and pays £0 in rent.
Having lived in Northampton for 10 years, paying £550 a month to live in a house share, Mr Bober – who was working different jobs – decided he wanted a change. He finally took the plunge after losing his dad in 2017 and struggling to hold down a relationship.
He now lives in Penzance, Cornwall, and works as an UberEats delivery driver, earning £300-400 a week – enough to ‘pay for my needs’.
Insisting his life has ‘improved hugely’, he stores all his possessions in the boot of his car and his outgoings mainly include car insurance, food and a £45 gym membership – so he can use the shower.
You might wonder what someone without a kitchen does for food, but Mr Bober mostly eats takeaways or buys bread to make his own sandwiches.
‘Living in my car makes me feel free – and to me, freedom is the most important thing’, he shares, adding that his new lifestyle means he is less stressed, too.
Originally leaving is home in Northampton because he disliked the ‘greyness’, Mr Bober claims his seven housemates were noisy and the area wasn’t the safest.
When his landlord emailed to ask him to leave in March 2023, Mr Bober saw an opportunity to ‘live wherever I want’.
He originally pitched up a tent in Penzance, living at different campsites for six months – so not only is the Fiat 500 setup cheaper, it’s slightly roomier, too.
Mr Bober added: ‘I decided I spent so much time in my car, it would make no difference if I sleep in it too.
‘With everything, there are good sides and bad sides – but my experience has been mostly positive.’
And it seems as though his new adventure is a good one, as Mr Bober travels around Cornwall frequently and has met ‘a lot of great people’ – even dating someone he met at a campsite for a while.
Where’s next for the savvy traveller? Mr Bober thinks his next destination will be Glastonbury.
‘When I decide to leave Penzance, I can just go – I’d love to live in Glastonbury for a while, or somewhere in Devon,’ he shared.
‘I love the atmosphere there, so maybe I’ll stay there.’
