Welding shop owner charged with shooting customer’s van

The owner of a welding shop in Kane County is accused of shooting the vehicle of a customer he was upset with, officials with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office said.

The customer reportedly left the van at Pan Man Welding on Route 64 in Virgil Township to get some work done on the vehicle, according to a news release from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. While work was being done on the van, the customer went back multiple times to get it, but each time was chased away by shop owner Todd Nord, 62, of Maple Park, officials said in the release.

During the most recent visit to the shop, the customer noticed that their vehicle was heavily damaged with bullet holes, the release said. When Kane County deputies investigated on June 3, Nord admitted he was the one who damaged the vehicle because he was upset with the customer, officials said.

Nord is a convicted felon who is not allowed to own any firearms, so on June 6, law enforcement searched his home and business, according to the release. Officials said they did not find any firearms but did find cocaine, unknown pills, miscellaneous ammunition and a STEN Mark III World War II submachine gun kit, the release said.

The unknown pills will be sent to the Illinois State Forensic Crime Lab for testing, the release said.

Nord has been charged with one count of armed violence, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, one count of possession of a firearm without a FOID card, one count of criminal damage to property, one count of reckless discharge of a firearm and two counts of possession of a controlled substance, officials said.
