In the last few years, big US brands have made their way across the pond and given burger and chicken lovers even more choice.

When it comes to fast food we all have our faves – McDonald’s, KFC and Burger King usually being at the top.

Hot on the heels of Shake Shack and Wendy’s is another American export that’s sure to get us all hot under the collar.

Popular burger restaurant, Carl’s Jr, has announced plans to open stores across the UK.

While it’s not been confirmed exactly when and where the stores will be opened – or how many of them will be launching in the UK – the brand has said it has ‘ambitious’ plans, with nearly 100 restaurants already across Europe.

Tim Lowther, general manager for Europe and Russia, told Restaurant Online ‘opening one or two restaurants is not a successful launch for us.’

He continued: ‘Carl’s has huge ambitions; we have doubled our international footprint in the last six years to 1000 restaurants internationally and plan on doubling it again in the next five years. So far we on target to do that.

‘People in the UK don’t know who Carl’s Jr is at the moment. but they certainly will’.

The chain specialises in chargrilled burgers, chicken goujons and milkshakes.

The burgers are said to be so good that fan, Roberta Padgett, told the brand on X (formerly Twitter): ‘I’m not going to lie they beat McDonald’s by a long shot’.

The biggest fan favourite, however, is the El Diablo burger. The fiery meal is made up of a potato bun, charbroiled beef, habanero sauce, bacon, Jalapeños, pepperjack cheese and jalapeño popper bites.

The item was originally launched in 2018 but made a permanent return to the Carl’s Jr menu last summer, following a fan petition.

At the time, the VP of brand marketing, Anthony Nguyen, said: ‘Carl’s Jr fans have insatiable taste, and El Diablo answers their demand for something amazing.’

Carl’s Jr was founded by Carl Karcher in Southern California in 1941 and now has over 1,100 restaurants in more than 35 countries across the world.

This is the latest step in the Californian fast food restaurant’s European expansion, following success in Turkey, Switzerland, Spain Denmark and France.

The chain is being brought to the UK thanks to a deal with Boparan Restaurant Group. Speaking about the deal, Mike Woida, president of Carl’s Jr parent company CKE International, said: ‘As part of our strategic growth plan, the UK has been a key target for some time.

‘BRG’s proven success and shared vision for Carl’s Jr in the UK make them the perfect partner. We look forward to serving our guests in the region and continuing our global growth journey.’

Other American fast food staples like Wendy’s and Popeyes have cropped up in the UK in recent years, and proven so popular that they’ve expanded the number of stores.

Here’s hoping Carl’s Jr has the same success – though we’re not sure if we’re brave enough to try the El Diablo.
