Highway 1 closed north of Big Sur because of slip-out – The Mercury News

California’s famous Pacific Coast Highway is closed north of Big Sur after a slip-out during Saturday’s storms.

The slip-out began in the southbound lane, but in a tweet Caltrans officials said the northbound lane could also be affected, and both lanes were closed early Saturday evening.

“This slip-out has closed the highway between Palo Colorado to just south of the Rocky Creek Bridge,” the agency said.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office added some detail Saturday evening, saying “the southbound lanes have been lost and northbound lanes impacted,” in a statement released on Twitter. “Caltrans engineers will assess conditions this tomorrow morning. The closure extends south to Limeklin. There is no estimate for opening.”

Other closures caused by big winter storms earlier this year, about 40 miles south on Highway 1 near Limekiln State Park, have been in place for months.
