A new M&S ready meal which mashes up two iconic cuisines is raising some eyebrows.

Shoppers can now find the Chargrilled Chicken Tikka Masala Pasta, which is the first creation ‘in a series of epic summer hybrids’ promised by the supermarket.

Yes, M&S have loaded the Italian favourite, pasta, with the iconic Indian tikka masala sauce – and while some are excited to have a taste, others are, well, confused.

‘Yep, you read that right!’ enthused M&S on their Instagram page.

‘We’ve combined Indian and Italian fusion flavours to create a creamy, rich and lightly spiced tikka masala sauce, with perfectly chargrilled chicken breast & delicate pasta finished with aged parmigiano!

‘The only question is … naan bread or garlic bread?!’

Of course, the internet shared their opinions.

Facebook user Maria Vuoto declared: ‘Being Italian I can’t think of any worse on my pasta! Why the need? Italian or Indian.’

And others assumed the new food item had come out at a suspicious time of year. ‘Is this not posted a few days early? It’s not April 1st yet,’ said Sally Ann Beaumont.

So, to settle the debate, we got our hands on this controversial £5 ready meal, and decided to give it a go for ourselves.

It takes just over three minutes to heat the food up in the microwave or you fry it for six minutes. Regardless of how you choose to warm it up, your kitchen – or possibly your office – will smell like delicious curry. So far, so good.

When I took the first bite, it was a shock to the system, I’m simply not used to eating curry and pasta paired together. But, in what may be even more shocking, I didn’t immediately hate it. In fact, I quite liked it.

It has a moderate level of spice, and the creamy sauce is tomato based, and who doesn’t love pasta with tomato sauce?

If you chicken tikka masala and rice is one of your top comfort food options, swapping the rice out for pasta probably won’t feel that weird.

It’s quite filling and hearty, especially with rigatoni pasta and big chunks of chargrilled chicken.

Chances are I won’t buy it again – if I wanted a comfort food dish I’d be more likely to opt for a lasagna or maybe a curry with naan – but others have been reeled in.

M&S fan Ann Mann wrote on Facebook: ‘Tried this today really enjoyed it’s not too spicy it was delicious I would like it to be a regular dish and not limited edition.’

And it turns out that others agree with me.

Chriss Ttinnee Pendergast, added: ‘OMG I had this for dinner tonight and it was absolutely delicious 100% would recommend.’

And Asha Shahi added that M&S may not have been as original as they think: ‘Yeah us Desi’s been making it for years!’

According to the supermarket, the dish was the brainchild of M&S Food chef Russ Goad, who developed the dish after being inspired by a trip to Pija Palace, a restaurant in California, that brings to life Italian American dishes through an Indian lens.

The tikka masala chicken pasta combo was born after Russ tasted a number of dishes.

Bethany Jacobs, product developer at M&S food, said: ‘Our Best Ever Chicken Tikka Masala is the number one Indian dish in our Foodhalls and we’re also famous for our pasta dishes, so when Russ came back with an idea of an Italian and Indian fusion, I was all for it.’
